Born in Montana, John grew up in Buckley, Washington. After graduating high school, he joined the Navy Submarine Service for two years. He received his pre-law degree from Seattle University in 1960, and established MCM in 1961.

Since then, his commitment and dedication has helped MCM become the business success it is today. For more than 50 years, MCM collaborated with high-net-worth individuals and organizations to develop long-term strategic solutions that meet their personal and business objectives.

The company has won awards for Washington's 100 Best Companies to Work For, Washington's Best Workplaces, and Washington's Top 75 Corporate Philanthropists from Seattle Business. In addition to his role as Chairman of Assured Partners MCM, John is Director Emeritus at M Financial Group. He is Trustee Emereti at Seattle University.

He served on the board of Expeditors International, McCormick Capital Management, Zion Preparatory Academy, Seattle Children's Hospital and Costco. He served on the advisory board of DA Davidson Inc., and Talon Private Capital. He supports organizations including United Way of King County, Food Lifeline, Mary’s Place, Global Partnerships, Medical Teams International, Friendship Circle, University of Washington Hospital, Seattle Symphony, White River High School Scholars and Rwanda Girls Initiative among others.
